How to Measure for Blinds and Shades
Use a steel tape measure and measure each window individually. Round measurements to the nearest 1/8 inch, and clearly distinguish between width and height to avoid transposition errors.
Inside Mount
- Measure window opening width at three points (top, middle, bottom); use the narrowest measurement
- Measure height from inside top surface to sill at three points; use the longest measurement
- Factory handles necessary allowances — no deductions needed
Outside Mount
- Extend measurements 3/4" beyond window opening on each side for light control
- Measure from top blind location to window sill
- Allow 1.5" to 3" overlap for optimal coverage
Inside Mount
- Measure the actual window opening width at three points; use the narrowest measurement
- Measure height at three points; use the longest measurement
- If you don't want shades to touch the sill, deduct 1/4"
Outside Mount
- Add overlap allowances for privacy and light control
- Measure from where you want the top of the shade to the bottom
- Consider adding 2-3" on each side for better coverage
Inside Mount
- Measure width at headrail location; requires minimum 2.5" depth
- Measure height at three points; use the smallest dimension
Outside Mount & Patio Doors
- Allow 4" overlap per side for privacy
- Extend 3" above and below openings
- For floor installations, deduct 1/2" from shortest height
- Left and right shade widths plus innerspace must equal overall width measurement
- Innerspace: minimum 1/4", maximum 2.5"
- Measure carefully to ensure proper fit across the entire span
Measuring Tips
- Always use a steel tape measure for accuracy
- Measure each window individually — never assume windows are the same size
- Double-check all measurements before ordering
- Round to the nearest 1/8 inch
- Clearly label width and height to avoid mix-ups
